Alex Fowler, a University of Portland women’s basketball alumna, was signed to a developmental player contract by the New York Liberty on May 14. Fowler will be activated for the Liberty’s game against the Portland Fire at the Moda Center. She is the first player from the Pilots program to make a Women’s National Basketball Association roster.
Fowler finished her four-year career at Portland as the program’s Division I all-time leader in points, field goals made, field goal percentage, and rebounds. She also ranks in the top ten for blocked shots and steals in school history.
The Australian native is notable for being the only player in program history to earn All-West Coast Conference First Team honors four times and is ranked fifth on the conference’s all-time scoring list. Her achievements include being named 2020 West Coast Conference Newcomer of the Year and earning Most Valuable Player honors at both WCC Tournaments that led to NCAA Tournament appearances in 2020 and 2023.
After graduating in 2023, Fowler continued her professional career internationally. She helped lead Townsville Fire of Australia’s Women’s National Basketball League to a championship during the 2025-26 season while averaging double figures in points and contributing across several statistical categories. She was named WNBL Rookie of the Year in 2024 with Townsville Fire and posted strong numbers with Perry Lakes Hawks during their NBL1 season as well.
Fowler has also represented Australia internationally, earning Most Valuable Player honors at the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup in 2025 after leading her team to a gold medal. In two preseason games with New York Liberty before signing, she averaged four points, three-and-a-half rebounds, and two-and-a-half steals per game.
Tickets remain available for Thursday’s matchup between New York Liberty and Portland Fire. The game will be televised live on Amazon Prime with local radio coverage on ESPN Portland.
