Emma Stolte finished her season at the NCAA West First Round on May 28 in Fayetteville, Arkansas, after placing 10th in her heat and 35th overall in the women’s 1,500 meters with a time of 4:23.19. Stolte ran with the leaders through the first two laps of her heat, which were noted as the fastest opening laps of the day.
Advancing to Saturday’s quarterfinals required finishing among the top five in each heat or having one of the next four-best times. Despite entering with a school record of 4:20.17 from an earlier meet, Stolte was ranked last in a field that included ten runners who had seasonal bests under 4:10; four of those competitors were also present in her heat.
Stolte became only the third athlete from Portland State University to qualify for the NCAA West First Round in this event and was the first since 2013. Her qualification followed strong performances at recent competitions, including winning Portland State’s first-ever title in the outdoor 5k and finishing second in the 1,500 meters at this year’s Big Sky Outdoor Championships. She accumulated a total of 18 points across both events—the most by any individual Viking since Genna Settle scored 20 points in 2017.
Throughout both indoor and outdoor seasons, Stolte set three school records. These included surpassing Katie Camarena’s mark for indoor 800 meters with a time of 2:08.51 and breaking long-standing records outdoors—a twelve-year-old record for the outdoor 1,500 meters and a thirty-nine-year-old record for the outdoor 5k previously held by Debbie Myra.
Earlier during cross country season last fall, Stolte tied another program record by achieving five top-10 finishes—including one at Big Sky Championships—making her one of only eight Vikings to earn All-Big Sky honors historically.
