Portland State Men’s Basketball Coach Jase Coburn has been named a finalist for the 2025-26 Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award. The honor, presented annually by CollegeInsider.com, recognizes a Division I coach who demonstrates both competitive success and integrity on and off the court.

The award highlights coaches who achieve results in basketball while also upholding strong moral standards. Coburn is among 25 head coaches from across the country to be considered for this year’s award.

This season, Coburn led Portland State to its first Big Sky Conference regular season title since 2008. The team holds a 19-10 record and enters the Big Sky Tournament as the top seed with a 13-5 mark in league play. Coburn is in his fifth year as head coach and has spent 13 seasons overall at Portland State, compiling an 81-74 record.

The award is named after Skip Prosser, who coached at Wake Forest and previously at Xavier and Loyola (Md.). During his time at Wake Forest, Prosser’s teams averaged 21 wins per season while competing in the Atlantic Coast Conference. He reached 100 wins at an ACC school faster than all but two coaches in conference history, coached NBA players Chris Paul and Josh Howard, led his team to its first No. 1 national ranking, and was named ACC Coach of the Year in 2003. In six years with Wake Forest, Prosser posted a record of 126-68; over his career he achieved a mark of 291-146.

Prosser passed away on July 26, 2007, after suffering an apparent heart attack in his office at Wake Forest.

The winner of this year’s award will be chosen by a committee made up of current and former head coaches along with senior staff members from collegeinsider.com. The announcement will take place in Indianapolis during the men’s Division I Basketball Championship.

Coburn joins other finalists including Lennie Acuff (Samford), Casey Alexander (Belmont), Johnny Dawkins (UCF), Mike DeGeorge (Cal Poly), Greg Gard (Wisconsin), Kyle Gerdeman (Lindenwood), Chris Holtmann (DePaul), Donte’ Jackson (Alabama A&M), James Jones (Yale), Greg Kampe (Oakland), Eric Konkol (Tulsa), Mark Madsen (California), Mike Magpayo (Fordham), Gerry McNamara (Siena), Paul Mills (Wichita State), Dave Moore (West Georgia), Ryan Odom (Virginia), Antoine Pettway (Kennesaw State), Brett Reed (Lehigh), Ryan Ridder (Mercer), Patrick Sellers (Central Connecticut State), Duane Simpkins (American), Zach Spiker (Drexel) and Dedrique Taylor (Cal State Fullerton).

Previous recipients include Mark Byington of Vanderbilt in 2025, Niko Medved of Colorado State in 2024, Pat Skerry of Towson in 2023, Jay McAuley of Wofford in 2022, Lew Hill of UTRGV in 2021, Mark Prosser of Western Carolina in 2020, Robert Jones of Norfolk State in 2019, Casey Alexander of Lipscomb in 2018, Danny Manning of Wake Forest in 2017, Zack Spiker of Army in 2016, Keno Davis of Central Michigan in 2015, Brian Wardle of Green Bay in 2014, Joe Mihalich of Niagara in 2013, Jimmy Patsos of Loyola MD in 2012, Chris Mack of Xavier in 2011, Bob Marlin of Sam Houston State in 2010, Ed Conroy of The Citadel in 2009 and Mike Brey of Notre Dame in 2008.

“Coach Jase Coburn has been named a finalist for the Skip Prosser Man Of The Year Award,” according to CollegeInsider.com. “The award is presented annually by CollegeInsider.com to the Division I coach who wins with integrity on and off the court.”

“The Skip Prosser Man Of The Year Award honors those who not only achieve success on the basketball court but who display moral integrity on and off it as well,” states CollegeInsider.com.
