Portland State University announced on Mar. 25 that Jaylin Henderson, an All-Big Sky Conference guard, will participate in the Slam Dunk Championship at the 37th annual State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships. The event is scheduled for Friday, April 3 at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis and will be broadcast nationally on ESPN on Sunday, April 5 at noon Eastern Time.
Henderson, a senior from Wichita, Kansas, was previously listed on the Watch List for the competition before being selected to take part this year. He averaged 18.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 1.6 steals per game during the season and is known for his highlight dunks and a reported vertical leap of 47 inches.
The annual event brings together top men’s and women’s college basketball players from across the country to compete in slam dunk and three-point shooting contests. In addition to the Slam Dunk Championship, competitions include the E*TRADE Men’s 3-Point Championship, Celsius Women’s 3-Point Championship and a team shootout. Winners of each three-point contest will later face off in what organizers call the Skechers Battle of the Champions.
Indianapolis has hosted this event seven times overall; this year marks its third appearance at Hinkle Fieldhouse, home of Butler University’s basketball teams.
Organizers note that past participants have included prominent names such as Gary Payton, Steve Nash, Cappie Pondexter and Odyssey Sims as well as more recent tournament standouts like Kris Jenkins and Ariel Atkins. The full roster of participants for this year’s championship will be released closer to the event date.
