University of Portland point guard Joel Foxwell has been named the West Coast Conference (WCC) Freshman of the Week for the seventh time this season. Foxwell achieved this recognition after averaging 27.5 points, 5.5 assists, and 2.5 steals over two games.
During a game against Pepperdine, Foxwell set a new school record for most points scored by a freshman in a single game with 35 points, surpassing the previous record of 32 set by Reggie Logan in 1976. In that same game, he recorded eight assists and two steals, shooting 13-for-23 from the field and making seven out of eight free throws.
Foxwell also broke the school’s single-season assist record previously held by Alec Wintering from the 2015-16 season. He now has 193 assists, surpassing Wintering’s mark of 187. Additionally, Foxwell exceeded last year’s freshman single-season scoring record set by Austin Rapp, reaching 464 points through Saturday’s game at Seattle University.
In the matchup against Seattle U, Foxwell contributed 20 points, three rebounds, three assists, and three steals. This marked his eleventh game of the season with at least 20 points.
Foxwell currently leads the WCC in total assists and is ranked first nationally among freshmen and sixth overall with 196 total assists. His average of 6.8 assists per game ranks twelfth nationally and is also the highest among freshmen. He averages 16 points per game overall—tied for fifth in the conference—and his average rises to 18.4 during WCC games, ranking third.
The Pilots will play their next game on Wednesday against No. 11 Gonzaga Bulldogs before concluding their regular season at home versus San Diego on Saturday.
