The Portland Pilots baseball team lost 10-7 to the Purdue Boilermakers in a closely contested game in Sugar Land, Texas. The defeat leaves the Pilots with a 1-2 record at the start of their season.

Portland’s offense was led by Cole Katayama-Stall, who hit two home runs and drove in three runs. This marks the first time Katayama-Stall has hit multiple home runs in a single game during his college career, bringing his total to 11 home runs over 53 games. Nolan Miller also contributed with a two-run homer, his second career home run. Brady Bean added an RBI single.

Trey Swygart started on the mound for Portland and pitched four innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out three batters. Ky Hoskinson made his debut for the Pilots, pitching two innings and giving up two runs. Aaron Louis and Logan Anderson finished the game, with Louis taking the loss.

The game saw several lead changes. Katayama-Stall opened scoring with a solo home run in the first inning. Purdue answered with scores in each of the next four innings, including a home run and an RBI single. Miller’s fourth-inning homer temporarily gave Portland a 3-2 lead before Purdue tied it again. Katayama-Stall’s second homer put Portland ahead once more, but Purdue responded with additional runs later in the game.

Purdue scored four times in the eighth inning to extend their lead to five runs. In the ninth inning, Portland loaded the bases twice and managed to score on a walk and wild pitch but could not complete a comeback as consecutive strikeouts ended their rally.

Other notes from the game include debuts for Ky Hoskinson on the mound and Brooks Avery as a pinch runner for Portland. Aaron Louis also made his season debut pitching for the Pilots.

The Pilots will play their next game against CSUN Matadors in Northridge on Wednesday, February 18 at 3 p.m., with live stats and video available through their official website.
