Basketball remains a leading college sport in the United States alongside football, with top NCAA programs drawing ample crowds and television viewers that compete with NBA audiences. National tournaments such as March Madness attract millions annually.
College sports have shifted significantly following a federal settlement that now allows schools to share revenue directly with players. Under the terms, the NCAA will pay $2.8 billion in back damages over 10 years to athletes who played from 2016 onward.
In 2022, athletes were also granted the ability to earn money from their name, image and likeness through both state legislation and changes to NCAA policy.
The NCAA reported around $900 million in revenue from media rights associated with March Madness and the Division I men’s basketball tournament in the 2024 fiscal year, making it the primary revenue driver for the organization.
