The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office and East County Vehicular Crimes Team are investigating a deadly two-vehicle crash involving a commercial semi-truck and a passenger sedan that occurred in Troutdale, according to a May 26 statement.

The investigation began at approximately 3:48 a.m. when emergency dispatchers with the Bureau of Emergency Communications received a 911 call about the collision at the intersection of Northeast Marine Drive and Northwest Sundial Road. Preliminary findings indicate that a Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan traveling west on Northwest Marine Drive collided with a commercial semi-truck driving south on Northwest Sundial Road. The sedan caught fire as a result of the crash.

Deputies arrived within six minutes to find the sedan on fire with fluid and fuel spilled onto the roadway. First responders located the driver of the Mercedes-Benz inside; he was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, identified as a 32-year-old woman, was transported to an area hospital with critical injuries. No update is available regarding her condition at this time.

The driver and passenger of the semi-truck were not injured and remained at the scene, cooperating with investigators. The driver of the semi is reported to be 29 years old.

Due to the severity, members of the East County Vehicular Crimes Team responded to document and reconstruct details using drone technology. Deputies closed Northeast Marine Drive from Northwest Dunbar through Northwest Sundial Road for safety reasons, impacting access for local businesses and TriMet services during their response efforts. The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office thanked Multnomah County Roads for assistance with traffic control.

The name of the deceased driver will be released after next-of-kin notifications are complete. Officials said no additional information is available for release at this time, noting that details may change as their investigation continues.
