The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office announced on May 15 that it is investigating a shooting that took place late Friday afternoon near Northeast 235th Avenue and Northeast Arata Road in Wood Village.
The incident began at 4:14 p.m. when a school bus driver called 911 to report a shooting near a bus stop. The case is drawing attention due to the involvement of a minor and the proximity to children and families in the area.
Deputies arrived quickly at the scene, where they found an injured female minor with a gunshot wound. They provided life-saving measures until paramedics arrived, who then transported her to a local hospital. Authorities said she was alert and responsive during care at the scene. While officials confirmed that the victim is underage, her exact age has not been verified yet. The connection between the victim, the school bus, and others present during the incident remains under investigation.
Witnesses told deputies that after firing shots, the suspect ran from the area immediately. A search for this individual is underway; however, there is no shelter-in-place order for residents nearby at this time.
Detectives are working to determine what happened and locate whoever is responsible for this act. The sheriff’s office also warned there may be traffic delays around Northeast 235th Avenue and Northeast Arata Road as investigators process evidence in the area.
Officials asked for patience from community members as they continue their work: “The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the community’s patience and cooperation as this investigation unfolds.” Anyone with information about what happened should call 911 or reach out via non-emergency line at 503-823-3333.
No public information officer will be responding to the scene currently. Further updates will be given once more details are confirmed by investigators.
