The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office River Patrol Unit announced on June 2 that it is preparing to support the United States Coast Guard in enforcing a security zone on the Willamette River during Fleet Week 2026.

The security zone will be in effect between the Hawthorne and Steel bridges from noon on Tuesday, June 2, through noon on Monday, June 8. The Coast Guard established this zone to protect vessels moored along the waterfront near Tom McCall Park and ensure public safety during Rose Festival events.

During this period, entry into or remaining within the designated security zone is prohibited without permission from the Sector Columbia River Captain of the Port. Boaters seeking access must request permission using VHF Marine Radio Channel 23A. All vessels will be examined by law enforcement partners before being escorted across the zone at a no wake speed.

Human-powered craft such as kayaks and paddleboards may transit through a designated paddle craft corridor marked by green lighted buoys after inspection, without an escort. Violating the safety zone can result in civil fines up to $40,000 or criminal penalties including fines and imprisonment.

A visible security presence from local agencies, including vessels from the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office River Patrol Unit, will be present throughout enforcement. Commuters are advised to expect travel delays both on land and water due to vessel arrivals starting Tuesday through Thursday and again on Monday for departures.

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office advises boaters and members of the public to wear life jackets, dress appropriately for weather and water temperature conditions, and practice responsible boating.
