Pepperdine University led the field after the first day of the Fresno State Spring Classic, establishing a 24-stroke advantage with team rounds of 290 and 282 for a total score of 572. Cal Poly finished the day in second place at 596, followed by California Baptist and CSUN tied at 599.
The event is being held at Fort Washington Golf and Country Club in Fresno, California, with eleven teams and seventy players competing on a par-72 course measuring 6,289 yards. Yingzhi Zhu from Pepperdine leads individually after posting scores of 73 and 67 for a four-under-par total of 140. Three golfers are one stroke behind Zhu.
For Portland State, junior Cynthia Valerie Ong was the top performer after two rounds, recording scores of 78 and 73 to stand in seventeenth place overall. Freshman Caithlyn Ong is currently in fortieth place with rounds of 79 and 77. Senior Bayler Brundage is forty-ninth with an aggregate score of 158. Senior Payten Shimizu and sophomore Maddie Dustin are tied for sixty-second place after both finished with totals of 164.
Portland State occupies tenth position among eleven teams. The Vikings trail Weber State but are ahead of Idaho State.
Bayler Brundage and Caithlyn Ong each made three birdies over thirty-six holes for Portland State, while Cynthia Valerie Ong recorded two birdies. Maddie Dustin and Payten Shimizu each had one birdie.
The final round will be played Tuesday morning.
