The Portland Pilots baseball team lost 3-2 to the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos in the second game of their three-game series, held in Santa Barbara, California. This defeat brings Portland’s season record to 2-4 and secures the series win for the Gauchos.
Brady Bean led Portland offensively, finishing 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and was hit by a pitch. Isaac Pfeifer contributed an RBI after drawing a walk in the sixth inning. The Pilots managed only three hits throughout the game, with Cole Katayama-Stall and Cody Nitowitz joining Bean in recording singles.
Logan Anderson started on the mound for Portland, pitching 3.1 innings while allowing three runs on two hits and striking out five batters. Four pitchers appeared for the Pilots: Anderson, Trey Swygart, Ky Hoskinson, and Grady Keljo. Swygart provided effective relief work with 2.2 scoreless innings and three strikeouts.
UC Santa Barbara took an early lead with a solo home run from Noah Karliner in the second inning and added two more runs in the fourth due to a walk and a wild pitch during Hoskinson’s time on the mound. The Pilots narrowed the gap in the sixth inning; Bean hit an RBI double followed by Pfeifer walking with bases loaded to make it 3-2. However, Portland could not score again.
“Bean was the top batter for the Pilots, going 1-for-3 with a double, a hit by pitch and an RBI,” according to team officials.
“Anderson was credited with the loss, with three runs counted against him and two hits. Two of Anderson’s three runs conceded came on a wild pitch and a walk by Hoskinson.”
“Swygart was the top pitcher for Portland, going 2.2 innings with three strikeouts and no runs or hits allowed.”
“Grady Keljo made his first appearance as a Pilot, throwing an inning.”
The series concludes tomorrow at noon.
