Along with football, basketball is among the most popular collegiate sports in the U.S., with top NCAA programs drawing substantial fan support and television audiences comparable to the NBA. Events like March Madness continue to attract millions of viewers annually.
Recent changes in college athletics have allowed schools to share revenue directly with athletes for the first time following a federal settlement. The agreement will also see the NCAA pay $2.8 billion in back damages over 10 years to athletes who competed since 2016.
In 2022, after extended legal and legislative efforts, athletes were granted the ability to profit from their names, images and likenesses through changes in state laws and NCAA policies.
During the 2024 fiscal year, the NCAA earned roughly $900 million from March Madness and Division I men’s basketball tournament media rights, making basketball its leading revenue stream.
