The Portland Pilots baseball team lost to the Seattle U Redhawks 6-2 in Bellevue, Wash., on April 3, dropping their second game of the series and bringing their season record to 18-10.
This result marks the first series loss for the Pilots since February. The team had eight hits and two runs in the game. Cole Katayama-Stall led with his seventh home run of the season—his second of this series and fourth in conference play—finishing 1-for-3 at bat with a homer and a hit by pitch. Jonas Salk, Isaac Pfeifer, and Cody Nitowitz each contributed multiple hits; Salk went 2-for-4 with a double while Pfeifer and Nitowitz both finished 2-for-3.
Starting pitcher Trey Newmann took the loss after pitching five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits but also striking out eight batters—a season high for him and for any Pilot this year. Kaden Segel pitched three innings in relief, giving up six hits and three runs.
Portland began strong as Katayama-Stall hit a solo home run in the first inning to give them an early lead. The Pilots scored again in the fourth when Brady Bean came home on an RBI groundout. However, Seattle U responded with an RBI double in their half of the fourth inning before scoring two more runs in both the fifth (one unearned) and seventh innings, plus another run in the eighth to secure their win.
The Pilots will attempt to avoid being swept when they play again tomorrow at noon.
