The Portland Pilots lost 5-2 to the Pepperdine Waves on May 10, with the Waves completing a sweep of the series. The defeat brings the Pilots’ record to 25-23 overall and 11-13 in West Coast Conference play.
The game saw Carter Stewart continue his strong performance at bat, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. This marks his second consecutive multi-hit game and third this season. Joe Fagan also recorded his second career multi-hit game, batting 2-for-3. Brady Bean contributed an RBI for Portland, which gave him sole possession of tenth place all-time for RBIs at the school.
Starting pitcher Kaden Segel took the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits over three and two-thirds innings while striking out four batters. Morgan Codron pitched in relief for four and one-third innings without allowing a run and struck out four; it was Codron’s longest outing of the season.
Pepperdine opened scoring with a two-run home run in the first inning. Portland responded in the third when Bean grounded out to drive Jonas Salk home, narrowing Pepperdine’s lead to one run. The Waves extended their advantage by adding three more runs in the fourth inning. Stewart drove in another run for Portland with a single in the sixth inning, but no further runs were scored by either team.
The Pilots will play their final nonconference game on Tuesday, May 12 against Oregon State University in Corvallis at 5:30 p.m.
