The Portland Pilots lost 8-3 to the No. 7 Oregon State Beavers on May 12, dropping their season record to 25-24.
The game saw Portland struggle offensively, recording only three hits but managing three runs. Cole Katayama-Stall hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning, marking his tenth homer of the year and making him the only Pilot with double-digit home runs this season. Jonas Salk and Trey Swygart contributed the other two hits for Portland. Starting pitcher Carter Gaston took the loss after allowing six runs over three and two-thirds innings, while Kaden Starr, Nolan Umlandt, and Aaron Louis also pitched in relief.
Oregon State built an early lead by scoring eight unanswered runs through six innings. The Beavers scored via a walk in the second inning, a three-run triple and sacrifice fly in the third, an RBI single in the fourth, and a two-run double in the sixth. The Pilots responded with an RBI groundout in the seventh before Katayama-Stall’s home run provided their final runs of the game.
Katayama-Stall’s performance brought his career total to nineteen home runs—tied for seventeenth all-time at Portland through just two seasons. Swygart and Salk each recorded one hit during the contest.
Looking ahead, Portland will return home for its final series at Joe Etzel Field this season against Pacific Tigers beginning Thursday, May 14 at 6 p.m.
