The Portland Pilots lost to the Pepperdine Waves 8-1 on May 9, giving the series to Pepperdine and bringing Portland’s overall record to 25-22 and their West Coast Conference record to 11-12.
The game saw limited offense from the Pilots, who managed one run on six hits. Cody Nitowitz, Carter Stewart, and Landon Kauffman each recorded two hits in four at-bats. Stewart hit a solo home run for Portland’s only score of the day, marking his second home run of the season. Kauffman’s two-hit performance was his first multi-hit game of both this season and his career.
Trey Newmann started for Portland and was charged with the loss after allowing six runs—three earned—over six innings while striking out six batters. Carter Gaston pitched two innings in relief, giving up two runs and striking out two.
Pepperdine took an early lead with four runs in the second inning, capitalizing on an error before Shawn Romero hit a two-run homer. The Waves added more runs with doubles in later innings to extend their lead to 8-0 before Stewart homered for Portland late in the game.
Jonas Salk was hit by a pitch for the forty-fifth time in his career during Saturday’s contest, moving him into second place all-time for Portland in that category. Newmann’s outing marked his fifth time this year striking out at least six batters—a total tied for most among Pilots pitchers this season.
The series between Portland and Pepperdine will conclude tomorrow at noon. Fans can find live stats and video options on PortlandPilots.com.
