The Portland Pilots lost to the Seattle University Redhawks 5-1 in the opening game of their baseball series, according to an April 2 report. The defeat drops the Pilots’ record to 18-9 overall and 5-2 in West Coast Conference play.
This loss is significant as it ends a three-game winning streak for Portland, though the team has still won ten of its last twelve games. Errors played a key role early on, with two mistakes leading to multiple runs for Seattle U in the second inning.
Trey Swygart continued his strong performance at the plate and on the mound. He went three-for-three with a double and a walk, extending his on-base streak to nineteen games. Swygart also pitched four innings in relief without allowing any runs and struck out six batters. Cole Katayama-Stall contributed offensively with his sixth home run of the season, going two-for-four at bat. It was his third home run against conference opponents this year.
Carter Gaston started for Portland but took his first loss of the season after giving up four runs—two earned—in three innings while recording one strikeout. Nolan Umlandt pitched an inning late in the game, allowing one run and one hit.
Seattle U built an early lead by capitalizing on errors and added runs through timely hitting and a wild pitch later in the game. The Pilots managed only one run from Katayama-Stall’s solo homer in the seventh inning.
The teams are scheduled to meet again tomorrow at Bannerwood Park.
