The Portland Pilots men’s baseball team earned a 5-3 victory over the University of Connecticut Huskies on March 15, closing out their three-game series and marking their third consecutive series win.
This result brings the Pilots’ season record to 10-7. The game saw strong pitching performances, with Will Labonte starting for Portland and allowing three runs on six hits over five and one-third innings, while Aaron Louis pitched three and two-thirds innings in relief without giving up a run. Louis recorded his first career win during this outing.
Offensively, seven different Pilots batters contributed hits. Leo Cote led the team with two runs batted in, while Cole Katayama-Stall, Trey Swygart, and Gage Bruce each added an RBI. Katayama-Stall and Dakota Chun both extended their hitting streaks to four games, currently the longest on the team.
UConn took an early lead with a home run in the first inning and another run in the fourth. Portland responded in the fifth inning by scoring three runs to take a brief lead before UConn tied it again in the sixth. The Pilots regained control in the eighth inning with two more runs and held off UConn for the remainder of the game.
With this win, Portland has now won eight of its last ten games and holds an 8-2 record at home. The team’s next matchup is scheduled against No. 18 Oregon State Beavers on Tuesday, March 17 at Joe Etzel Field.
