The Portland State men’s tennis team lost 6-1 to Idaho State at Reed Gym, according to a March 26 announcement. Despite winning the doubles point and pushing two singles matches to three sets, the Vikings were unable to overcome the Bengals.
The result is significant as it marks Portland State’s fourth conference loss of the season, leaving them with a record of 5-13 overall and 1-4 in Big Sky Conference play. The match highlighted both early promise from Portland State and challenges in singles competition.
Portland State began with back-to-back doubles wins after adjusting their lineup. Maas Schotanus and Aarjun Pandit secured a victory at No. 1 doubles, while Luke Lu and Ignacio Ruiz clinched another win at No. 3, giving the Vikings an early lead going into singles matches.
However, Idaho State responded by evening the score with a win at No. 1 singles before taking four more points in subsequent matches. Schotanus forced his match at No. 2 singles into three sets but ultimately fell short against Sep De Visser. Luca Prino also took his opening set but was defeated in three by Sam Wensley.
Idaho State secured straight-set victories on courts four through six to complete their win over Portland State.
Looking ahead, Portland State will finish its regular season with three remaining matches in April: hosting Idaho on April 5 before traveling for away games against Sacramento State on April 16 and UC Davis on April 17.
