The Portland State men’s tennis team lost 6-1 to Northern Arizona on March 8 at the NAU Tennis Center in Flagstaff, Arizona. The match concluded a three-match weekend for the Vikings.

The result leaves Portland State with a record of 4-9 overall and 1-1 in Big Sky Conference play. The team’s only point came from junior Hampus Hagglund, who won his singles match at the No. 6 position in three sets. Northern Arizona, now 8-5 overall and 2-0 in conference play, secured the doubles point by winning matches on courts two and three. The top doubles match was left unfinished after the Lumberjacks clinched the point.

Northern Arizona claimed victory by winning four singles matches in straight sets across the top four courts. Ignacio Ruiz and Hagglund both extended their matches to three sets. Ruiz won his first set against Takumi Katsuda at No. 5 but lost the next two, finishing with scores of 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. Hagglund also took his opening set against Daniels Tens before dropping the second set and then rallying to win the third set for a final score of 7-5, 2-6, 6-3.

The Vikings will return home for two matches at Tualatin Hills Tennis Center next weekend. They are scheduled to face Lewis & Clark on Friday, March 13 at 10 a.m., followed by Montana on Sunday, March 15 at the same time.

Looking ahead, these upcoming home matches provide an opportunity for Portland State to improve its conference standing as it continues through its spring season.
