Portland State softball lost to Montana 5-4 in the series finale on March 29, as the Vikings’ late rally was not enough to overcome the Grizzlies at Grizzly Softball Field.
The result gave Montana a sweep of the three-game series, marking its first sweep over Portland State since 2021. The Vikings now hold a record of 10-22 overall and remain winless in Big Sky Conference play at 0-3.
Abigail Carsley opened scoring for Portland State with a solo home run in the third inning. After falling behind by three runs, Mia Martinez hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning, and Carsley followed with an RBI double to tie the game at four. However, Montana answered with a go-ahead RBI double in the bottom of the sixth and held off Portland State’s final attempts in the seventh inning.
Carsley led Portland State offensively, going two-for-three with two runs batted in. Both Gracie Walters and Sherreigh Nakoa-Chung pitched for Portland State, with Nakoa-Chung striking out seven batters over five innings.
Looking ahead, Portland State will travel for a three-game Big Sky Conference series against Idaho State on April 3 and April 4. In other team news, sophomore right fielder Gracie Toney earned national attention by landing on SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays Saturday night.
