Portland State softball will begin its Big Sky Conference schedule this weekend with a three-game series against Montana in Missoula, the team announced on March 27. The games are set for March 28 and 29 at Grizzly Softball Stadium, with all matchups available to stream live on ESPN+.
This opening conference series follows a challenging non-conference stretch for the Vikings, who have played 29 games so far this season. Portland State enters conference play with a record of 10-19, while Montana holds an 8-22 mark. The Vikings have had recent success against the Grizzlies, winning four straight regular-season series since 2022 and taking last year’s matchup two games to one.
Head coach Meadow McWhorter recently achieved her 150th career win at Portland State earlier this season. The team’s pitching staff has shown improvement over the past ten games, posting a lower earned run average than their season average and holding opponents to fewer hits. Senior right-hander Sherreigh Nakoa-Chung threw a no-hit shutout in the home opener against North Dakota on March 20 and was named Big Sky Co-Pitcher of the Week for her performance.
Offensively, senior Grace Johnson leads Portland State with a .425 batting average and is perfect in stolen base attempts this year. She tied the program’s Division I-era career stolen base record during last weekend’s games against Santa Clara and is now one steal away from setting a new record outright. Freshman Mia Martinez leads the team in runs batted in and home runs.
The Vikings’ defense currently leads the Big Sky Conference with a .965 fielding percentage despite some recent errors. The roster features both experienced returners and several newcomers, including multi-sport athletes who also compete on Portland State’s soccer team.
Looking ahead, Portland State will continue its regular-season schedule after this opening conference series as it seeks to build momentum within Big Sky play.
