This figure represented 10.6% of all sports-related expenditures by the university for the year.

Alongside football, basketball ranks among the most popular collegiate sports in the U.S.. Large NCAA programs routinely attract fan bases and TV audiences that can compete with those seen in the NBA, with events like March Madness drawing millions each year.
College athletics is undergoing change as a federal agreement now permits schools to share revenue with athletes directly for the first time. The settlement further requires the NCAA to pay $2.8 billion in damages over the next decade to athletes who participated from 2016 onward.
Starting in 2022, athletes secured the ability to earn money from their names, images and likenesses after a span of legislative and legal changes resulted in updated NCAA policies and new state laws.
The NCAA earned approximately $900 million from March Madness and media rights to Division I men’s basketball tournaments in fiscal year 2024—making basketball its top revenue source.
