UTEP secured a first-place finish at the Bowling Green Intercollegiate Golf Tournament, held at Wigwam Golf Resort’s Blue Course in Litchfield, Arizona. The Miners led from the start and completed three rounds with a total score of 863, outpacing 14 other teams.
Portland State University finished 12th with a combined team score of 928 over three rounds (310-306-312). Among the Big Sky Conference schools present, Portland State finished ahead of Montana but behind Idaho.
Amelia Fridlund from UTEP won the individual title after shooting a three-under-par total of 210 (70-71-69) across the tournament. She edged out her teammate Nichapas Thawinwan and Kamri Gabel from UT-Arlington by one stroke; both posted scores of 211.
For Portland State, junior Cynthia Valerie Ong was the top performer, tying for 37th place among 84 competitors with rounds of 78, 74, and 75 for a total of 227. Senior Payten Shimizu tied for 57th at 234 (80-76-78), while sophomore Maddie Dustin followed closely at 235 (78-78-79). Senior Bayler Brundage scored a total of 237 (74-81-82), finishing in 67th place. Junior Momo Udom tied for 69th with scores totaling 239 (81-78-80).
The event also highlighted individual achievements among Portland State players in birdies over the tournament’s three rounds: Payten Shimizu and Bayler Brundage each made five birdies; Maddie Dustin recorded four birdies and an eagle; Cynthia Valerie Ong and Momo Udom each made four birdies.
The Wigwam Golf Resort Blue Course is scheduled to host the Big Sky Championship from April 20 to April 22. Portland State will next compete at the Fresno State Spring Classic on March 2–3 at Fort Washington Golf Club in Fresno.
