Portland State freshman Anjola Ige earned her first career Big Sky Conference win on March 22, providing the only point for the Vikings in a 6-1 loss to Northern Arizona at the NAU Tennis Center.
The result brings Portland State’s record to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play. The team lost the doubles point after Northern Arizona secured decisive victories on the top two courts. Scarlett Perkins and Ige were trailing at line three when their match was left unfinished due to NAU clinching the doubles point.
Northern Arizona then won straight-set singles matches on courts one, three, and four to secure victory. Marta Giglio of Portland State initially took the first set at No. 2 singles but lost momentum as Andrea Noguera came back with a second-set win and edged out Giglio in a close super tiebreaker, ending Giglio’s eight-match winning streak.
At No. 5 singles, Hana Abdelhamid extended her match into a third set after splitting sets with Leontina Stojanovic but ultimately fell short in another super tiebreaker. The highlight for Portland State came from Ige’s performance at No. 6 singles where she defeated Mia Wolter convincingly in straight sets.
The Vikings are scheduled to return home for their next match against Idaho on Sunday, March 29 at Tualatin Hills Tennis Center.
