The Portland State women’s tennis team will begin its Big Sky Conference schedule at home, hosting Montana State on March 15 and Montana on March 16 at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center.
The matches mark the start of conference play for the Vikings, who hold a 4-3 overall record. The team is aiming to qualify for its second consecutive Big Sky Tournament by building on its performance from non-conference competition.
During non-conference play, Portland State achieved a combined singles record of 27-15 and a doubles record of 15-5. Sophomore Marta Giglio leads the team with a 6-1 record in both singles and doubles. Giglio recently received her first career Big Sky Player of the Week award after winning all four of her matches against Lewis-Clark State College and Portland. Fellow sophomores Kasumi Hirayama and Hana Abdelhamid each have five singles wins entering the weekend, while every member of the team has recorded at least four doubles victories.
Both visiting teams are seeking their first conference wins this season. Montana State enters with an overall record of 3-8 and a conference record of 0-3, while Montana holds a 2-8 overall mark and is also winless in three conference matches. Last season, Portland State lost to Montana State but defeated Montana during away games.
Historically, Portland State trails both opponents in head-to-head matchups. The Vikings have won four out of eighteen meetings against Montana State and eight out of twenty-six against Montana.
