The Portland State women’s tennis team lost a close 4-3 match to Eastern Washington on April 4 at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton, Oregon. The Vikings dropped the doubles point but rallied in singles before ultimately falling short in their home finale.

This result affects both teams’ standings within the Big Sky Conference, with Portland State moving to a 6-6 overall record and 2-3 in conference play. Eastern Washington improved its record to 9-7 overall and 3-2 in conference matches.

In doubles, Kasumi Hirayama and Nene Uemura secured an early win for the Vikings with a score of 6-2 over Anait Arutiunian and Sara Vasic. However, Eastern Washington responded by winning at No.1 and No.3 doubles positions, taking an initial lead.

During singles play, Portland State won three consecutive matches. Hirayama claimed victory over Veronika Gayevyk (7-6, 6-2), Hana Abdelhamid defeated Olivia Marias (6-4, 6-2), and Uemura came back from losing her first set to beat Zoe Predel (4-6, 6-0, 6-1). Despite these efforts, Eastern Washington’s Aneliss Zamfirescu earned a point against Anjola Ige on court six. On court one, Scarlett Perkins pushed Nizetic into a third-set tiebreak but lost (6-1, 2-6, 7-6(3)).

The deciding match was played between Marta Giglio of Portland State and Arutiunian of Eastern Washington on court three. After splitting the first two sets—Arutiunian winning the first (7-5) and Giglio taking the second (7-6)—Arutiunian clinched victory for her team with a final set win (7-5, 6-7, 6–3). This marked only Giglio’s third loss of the season.

Looking ahead, Portland State will finish its regular season with three away matches: at Weber State on April10; Idaho State on April12; and Sacramento State on April18.
