Portland State University’s women’s tennis team narrowly lost to the University of Portland on Sunday, with a final score of 4-3 at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton, Oregon.
The Vikings, now holding a 4-3 record for the season, have seen similar results in recent matchups against the Pilots. In three of their last five meetings, including Sunday’s contest, Portland State fell by the same 4-3 margin. The University of Portland improved its record to 3-5 with this win.
Doubles play set the tone for the match. The Pilots secured victories on two doubles courts and earned the opening point. That early advantage proved decisive in the overall result. However, Portland State’s top pair, Hana Abdelhamid and Marta Giglio, extended their winning streak to five matches by defeating Nadine Arbaizar Martinez and Alaia Rubo Perez 6-4 at No. 1 doubles.
Due to injuries within the squad, every member of Portland State’s singles lineup moved up one spot from their usual positions. Cecilia Dang made her debut in singles competition for the Vikings at line six.
Despite these adjustments, several Vikings performed well in singles play. Kasumi Hirayama defeated Martinez 6-3, 6-0 at line three. Abdelhamid posted a strong win over Flores at No. 4 with a score of 6-4, 6-1. After Portland clinched the overall match victory, Giglio closed out Dariya Radulova 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. This win brought Giglio’s individual record to a team-best 6-1 during non-conference play.
Looking ahead, only Big Sky Conference matches remain on Portland State’s schedule for the rest of the season. The Vikings will open conference play against Montana State on Sunday, March 15 at Tualatin Hills Tennis Center.
