The Portland Pilots women’s basketball team lost 77-66 to the Santa Clara Broncos at home, ending their four-game winning streak. The Pilots now have a record of 15-11 overall and 9-5 in West Coast Conference play.
Lainey Spear led the Pilots with a career-high 20 points, scoring 16 of those in the second half. She is the third Pilot this season to score at least 20 points in a game. Florence Dallow also contributed significantly, reaching double figures for the fifth consecutive game and for the 13th time this season, finishing with 13 points and nine rebounds. Rhyan Mogel added 10 points and four assists.
Portland made eight three-pointers and shot 40% from beyond the arc. The team recorded 17 assists during the game.
Santa Clara took an early lead with a seven-point run after Portland’s opening basket. The Pilots responded but did not regain control of the lead during the first quarter, which ended with Santa Clara ahead by one point. In the second quarter, both teams traded runs; Portland built an eight-point advantage before Santa Clara answered back to retake the lead. By halftime, Portland was up by four points.
The Pilots extended their lead early in the third quarter but saw it shrink as Santa Clara put together another run. Heading into the final period, Portland held a narrow three-point advantage.
In the fourth quarter, Santa Clara went on a ten-point run while holding Portland scoreless for several minutes. Although Portland narrowed the deficit to three points late in the game, they could not stop Santa Clara’s offense down the stretch. The Broncos secured their win by making their last six free throws.
