Portland Pilots baseball players Trey Swygart and Alex Via were recognized on Mar. 23 with West Coast Conference Player of the Week awards, marking the first time this season that two Pilots have received weekly conference honors.

These awards highlight individual achievements as well as the team’s recent success in conference play. The recognition comes during a period when the Pilots have been performing strongly, both at home and on the road.

Swygart was named Player of the Week after excelling both offensively and as a pitcher. He posted a .533 batting average for the week, hitting two home runs and driving in six runs. Both home runs came during Friday’s game against Loyola Marymount University (LMU), making him the first Pilot to hit multiple homers in a single game this year. On the mound, Swygart secured a win by pitching 3.2 innings with seven strikeouts—tying for most strikeouts by any Pilot pitcher in one game this season.

Freshman pitcher Alex Via earned Freshman of the Week honors after closing out two games over the weekend without allowing any hits or runs across 2.1 innings pitched, securing saves in both appearances. These saves occurred in close games where Portland led by two runs or fewer. Via now has four saves on the season, ranking second in conference standings and seventeenth nationally.

The team is currently enjoying a six-game winning streak following its first-ever road sweep of LMU and a victory over then-No. 17 Oregon State Beavers at home—a feat not achieved since 2024 and their first such win at Joe Etzel Field since 2021. The Pilots have won twelve of their last fourteen games overall and hold a conference-best record of fourteen wins to seven losses this year.

Portland is scheduled to play again today at 6 p.m., facing off against Northwestern Wildcats.
