Portland Pilots two-way player Trey Swygart led his team to a 5-3 victory over the Loyola Marymount University Lions in the opening game of conference play, according to a March 20 announcement. The win brings the Pilots’ record to 12-7 for the season and marks their fourth consecutive victory.
The result is significant as it sets a positive tone for Portland’s performance in West Coast Conference competition. The team has now won ten of its last twelve games, showing strong momentum early in the conference schedule.
Swygart was a standout both at bat and on the mound. He went three-for-three with two home runs and three runs batted in, while also pitching 3.2 innings without allowing a run and striking out seven batters. With this performance, Swygart now shares the team lead for home runs and wins this season. Jonas Salk contributed by going two-for-four at the plate, while Dakota Chun added two hits, including his eighth double of the year—twice as many as any other Pilot batter.
Pitcher Trey Newmann started for Portland, throwing four innings with seven strikeouts and three runs allowed. Alex Via earned his third save by closing out the final 1.1 innings without giving up a run. The team’s total of fifteen strikeouts set a new season high.
The Lions took an early lead with three runs through four innings before Portland tied it up in the fifth inning thanks to Swygart’s solo home run and Chun’s two-run double. In the eighth inning, Swygart hit another home run that brought in himself and Salk, securing the final score.
Looking ahead, Portland will face LMU again tomorrow at 3 p.m., with live stats and video options available on PortlandPilots.com.
