Following a federal settlement, schools are now able to share revenue directly with college athletes. The agreement also directs the NCAA to pay $2.8 billion in back damages over 10 years to athletes who participated from 2016 onward.

The NCAA earned nearly $900 million in revenue from the March Madness and Division I men’s basketball tournament media rights during the 2024 fiscal year, making men’s basketball its leading income source.
