Portland Pilots freshman pitcher Will Labonte was named West Coast Conference (WCC) Freshman of the Week for the second consecutive time, according to an April 6 announcement from the team.
Labonte received this recognition after a strong performance against Seattle University, where he started and pitched six innings without allowing a run and gave up only two hits. He also struck out six batters during that game. This marks the fourth occasion this season that a Portland Pilots player has received WCC Player of the Week honors.
So far this year, Labonte has made eight appearances with a record of three wins and no losses. He leads his team in innings pitched with 42.1 and holds an earned run average (ERA) of 1.70, which is first in the conference and twentieth nationally. Among freshmen nationwide, Labonte ranks second in ERA and is currently the only WCC pitcher to have allowed fewer than ten runs this season.
Labonte was also recently named to Perfect Game’s Midseason All-American Second Team following another strong start last week. The Pilots currently hold a record of 19-10 overall and are 5-3 in conference play as they prepare for their next game against Oregon on April 8 at Joe Etzel Field.
