Washington, D.C.—On April 27, 2023, Congressman Earl Blumenauer (OR-03), a senior member of the House Budget Committee and Ways and Means Committee, released the following statement on his vote against Speaker McCarthy’s debt limit proposal:

“If the Majority cared about spending, they would be all on board for means testing, payments caps, and work requirements for the multibillion-dollar Farm Bill subsidy program. Consider the nearly 20,000 agribusinesses that received taxpayer-funded federal farm subsidies for 37 consecutive years, totaling $18 billion. To save money, let’s start here instead of slashing SNAP benefits for low-income Americans like Speaker McCarthy is suggesting with his debt limit proposal.”

Last month, Blumenauer introduced his Food and Farm Act, an alternative to the Farm Bill that reels in the multi-billion-dollar subsidy industry while making progress on everything from nutrition to the environment. Rather than continuing to invest in large corporations disproportionately, the Food and Farm Act would level the playing field for small, midsized, and beginning farmers who grow healthy food and take care of the environment.
