WASHINGTON, D.C.— On May 18, 2023, Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) and Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) introduced the Bicycle Commuter Act of 2023 to reinstate bicycle commuter benefits, allowing employees to receive a bicycle benefit of up to 30% of employer-offered parking benefits.
“At a time when we should be doing everything in our power to cut carbon emissions, it is nonsensical that the federal tax code still incentivizes driving over biking. This legislation would change that by creating a commuter tax benefit for biking to work—just like we have for parking and transit,” said Congressman Blumenauer, founder and co-chair of the Congressional Bicycle Caucus, “The bicycle is the most efficient form of transportation ever designed. It allows people to burn calories instead of carbon and meets fundamental transportation needs quickly and easily.”
“It’s too expensive for too many Ohioans to get to work. This will bring down transportation costs for Ohioans who bike, make it a more affordable option for more people, and reduce traffic for Ohioans on the road,” said Senator Brown.
