WASHINGTON, D.C.— On May 19, 2023, Congressman Earl Blumenauer, founder and co-chair of the Congressional Animal Protection Caucus, lead a letter urging the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) for a full investigation into the horse deaths that have occurred in the leadup of this year’s Kentucky Derby.

The letter requests that the results of the investigations be made public, an evaluation of additional HISA authority required to prevent future horseracing deaths, and insight into whether a connection exists between thoroughbred breeding techniques and the alarming number of horse deaths.

The bipartisan letter was signed by 15 Members of Congress. A full text of the letter can be found here.
